Autism Essay Essays Autism Essay Essay Autism Essay Essay There were so many emotions that came up as I watched the video, from sad to helpless, and empathy. I empathize with the parents because it has to be very traumatizing and heart wrenching to know that your child will always have this Ã¢â¬Å"special needÃ¢â¬ for the rest of their life. Many of the mothers in the video had many financial struggles as a result of autism. Although it is very evident that each mother truly loved and appreciate their child you can see that it is very tough for them to cope and adapt to their lifestyle that is revolved around caring for a child struggling with autism. Most of the mothers have experienced rude and bewildering looks and questions from other parents who do not understand the dynamics of autism, they also shared a common bond with the other mothers because the mothers of autistic children can understand and sympathize with the demands of the autistic child. Many of the parents were exhausted, drained, tired, helpless, heartbroken, and alone. Working outside the home is virtually impossible because their autistic children needs constant supervision and care. This in turn leads to the fathers of the children to be the sole supporter which puts more strains on the relationship/marriage. I felt that the children were very lucky to have mothers who cared so much and was more than willing to go the extra mile and to continually love and support them. I felt sorry for the mothers because they really looked sad but brave. I read an article that many disabled children are at an increased risk of being abused and mistreated because of their disabilities and the strains it puts on the families involved. But these children were very well loved and taken care of. One mother said her entire day is dealing with therapists and specialists and many doctor appointments. These children were a bit rambunctious but somewhat mild mannered. It is evident that they do have many Ã¢â¬Å"meltdownsÃ¢â¬ that are not understood by strangers when they are in public places. I could not imagine having to deal with a autistic child simply because it would put so much stress and pressure on me. I applaud the mothers for being so jovial with their children. One mother pointed out the fact that she may never get to share a dance with her son at his wedding because of his autism, he may never get the chance or opportunity to get married. Many autistic children wonÃ¢â¬â¢t live normal lives and have the Ã¢â¬Å"normalÃ¢â¬ and traditional lifestyle that other children will have and grow up to have. One mother was still struggling with that fact and it has been terribly hard to get her mid wrapped around that concept. I really felt a pain for her because I know many women grow up wanting to have children and then when they finally do and the child has a disability it is hard to get rid of the picture perfect lifestyle and child they imagined themselves having. One mother talked about how she was always scared when the phone rung that it would be her daughterÃ¢â¬â¢s school saying that her autistic child hit, bit or acted out violently. One mother talked about the many roof leaks she has had for years but can simply not afford to repair it because it was too expensive and the money she had would go to caring for her child with autism. All the mothers dealt with the same struggles and tribulations but through it they still have lots of moments of happiness with their child. They are very inspirational to watch them talk and discuss their feelings and details of their childÃ¢â¬â¢s and their lives. If I had an child who suffered from autism it would of course be hard but my parental skills would kick in and I would be doing the same thing as the mother in this documentary. Just because your child has a Ã¢â¬Å"special needÃ¢â¬ or disability doesnÃ¢â¬â¢t means that kid does not want and deserves love. ALL children need and want love. I commend these brave mothers.

Constitutional Law - Essay Example The juvenile was sent by his father to live with the paternal grandparents in South Carolina. The hospitals in the state did not have any Paxil, so they opted for an alternative drug, Zoloft. Zoloft is also an antidepressant. The accused experienced extreme side effects as a result of drug substitution. In addition, the doctors decided to double the dosage in an effort to reduce the side effects (State v Pittman). On the day he committed the offense, the defendant was punished by his grandfather. He resented the punishment and took the decision to kill both grandparents. He used their shotgun to kill. He shot them and burnt the house using candles and paper. He consequently stole the family dog, $33 and left the house in his grandparentsÃ¢â¬â¢ car. The trial court also heard that he was apprehended some counties away from the scene of the crime and claimed that the death of his grandparents was a result of burglary. The defendant attorneys argued that the accused ought not to have been tried as an adult due to health and mental issues. The defense attorneys argued that the Pittman was under duress from a mental condition. The claim is grounded on the fact that prior to the crime, the convict had a depression problem. Pittman was under antidepressant drugs at the time he committed the crime. South Carolina state law does not have an age limit that differentiates a juvenile trial and an adult trial. The trial court in South Carolina determined that the defendant could be tried as an adult. The prosecution showed that it was indeed the defendant that committed the crime using a shotgun. The court also heard the happenings prior to the attack and after the attack. The prosecutor proved that the offense was carefully choreographed, thus warranting an adult trial. However, the defense team is adamant that although Pittman committed the crime, he was a juvenile under depression. The accused was also under new medication that negatively impacted on his mental

Photosynthesis - Lab Report Example Leaf discs used in this experiment have chloroplasts and contain the green coloring matter, chlorophyll; therefore photosynthesis takes place in the given leaves under favorable conditions. In this experiment, effects of different colors of light on the rate of photosynthesis will be investigated. The experiment will determine the effects of blue and green light on the rate of photosynthesis in leaf discs of English ivy (Hedera Helix). Energy levels recorded in different colors (wavelengths) of light and absorption of light by a leaf are correlated to the rate of photosynthesis. Blue light has been identified to have a higher absorbance by pigments of photosynthesis in plants and it also has a higher energy wavelength compared to green light. Therefore, leaf disks of English ivy placed in blue light will be expected to have a higher rate of photosynthesis compared to leaf disks of English ivy placed in green light. In the first experiment, we measured the rate of photosynthesis under blue and green lights. For each sample, the rate of photosynthesis was monitored to demonstrate that each color had an effect on the rate with which the discs of English ivy will photosynthesize. Discs under the green light photosynthesized faster than leaf discs under the blue light in this first experiment. Results obtained were believed not to be correct since photosynthesis is supposed to be faster under the blue light. A possible explanation for these results could be that the foils that were used to cover the beakers could have reflected some light therefore making leaf discs under green light to photosynthesize faster compared to those under blue light. A second experiment was conducted since data obtained from the first experiment was not accurate according to hypothesis. Only two beakers were used, one for green light and the other for blue light. The beakers were covered by green and blue circular filters.

The Marketing Environment Essay The marketing environment surrounds and impacts upon the organization. There are three key elements to the marketing environment which are the internal environment, the microenvironment and the macroenvironment. Why are they important? Well marketers build both internal and external relationships. Marketers aim to deliver value to satisfied customers, so we need to assess and evaluate our internal business/corporate environment and our external environment which is subdivided into micro and macro. Internal Environment The internal environment has already been touched upon by other lessons on marketing teacher. For example, the lessons on internal marketing and also on the functions within an organization give a good starting point to look at our internal environment. A useful tool for quickly auditing your internal environment is known as the Five Ms which are Men, Money, Machinery, Materials and Markets. Here is a really quick example using British Airways. Looking internally at men, British Airways employees pilots, engineers, cabin crew, marketing managers, etc. Money is invested in the business by shareholders and banks for example. Machinery would include its aircraft but also access to air bridges and buses to ferry passengers from the terminal to the aircraft. Materials for a service business like British Airways would be aircraft fuel called kerosene (although if we were making aircraft materials would include aluminium, wiring, glass, fabric, and so on). Finally markets which we know can be both internal and external. Some might include a sixth M, which is minutes, since time is a valuable internal resource.

The False Equality of Americans In economic, social and political terms, equality is more of an idea than a reality for many people in America; the majority of money and power has been in the control of White men since colonial times. Ideologies like racism and sexism perpetuate the status quo by isolating under- privileged groups. Problems arise from divisions that are created between two under- privileged groups. For example, the cry for equality loses much of its power when it is fractured into several segmented cries. The book Outside the Magic Circle, addresses this issue. Organizations which successfully fought for equality, like the NCAPT, were destroyed by forces (such as anti communism) which essentially divide the groupsÃ¢â¬â¢ members and the groups, themselves. Thus, any given group becomes ineffective. This book demonstrates that unity is the best way to fight for equality. The red scare was brought upon by men like Joseph McCarthy, who were eager to exploit peopleÃ¢â¬â¢s fear of Russia for personal benefit and power. Anyone who was associated with communism was highly scrutinized to be a Russian spy. Instead of fighting for the rights of the accused individuals, many social action groups ridded themselves of these very people. Durr realized that red baiting would destroy liberal groups which were fighting for justice. The NCAPT refused to dismiss people who were believed to be communist, but other groups were driven by fear and fired large numbers of people. Ã¢â¬Å"Everybody began to purge. The NAACP purged, the unions purged, everybody purgedÃ¢â¬ (191). Instead of fighting stereotypes many groups fell prey to them, and in doing so lost their ability to challenge the status quo. Therefore Ã¢â¬Å"the whole liberal movement of the United States died...(because) it became exclusively anti communisticÃ¢â¬ (186). Equally effective at seperating people as anti-communism was the upper class which manipulated and abused the lower class for profit. Ã¢â¬Å"Every Southern state, every chamber of commerce, and every corporation thought the way to make the South prosperous was cheap laborÃ¢â¬ (179). Thus, members of the Southern upper class employed methods to keep people in lower classes. Ã¢â¬Å"The Southern oligarchy was ruining all the unions by keeping them from organizingÃ¢â¬ (156). At a time when labor unions were beginning to cross racial lines, the manner in which their empowering rise was quelled made alleviated race relations impossible. Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679) and John Locke (1632-1706) belonged to the same generation of philosophers.Ã However, both philosophers viewed English Revolution differently.Ã Hobbes had experienced the English Revolution as a time of brutality.Ã Thence, the philosopher compared the revolution to what he referred to as the Ã¢â¬Å"state of natureÃ¢â¬ (or, a state of primitiveness). This state was ruthless and uncouth.Ã Hobbes believed that revolutions were similarly a negative state, and in order to guard itself against the malice of revolutions, society needed a strong king and strict governance, somewhat akin to the Panopticon state of Michel Foucault.Ã Locke, on the other hand, lauded the concept of revolution as a necessity during times of governmental disturbance.Ã In other words, the philosopher with a good view of revolution believed in dismantling the government if it does not work (Ã¢â¬Å"Locke and HobbesÃ¢â¬ ). Sharp (2006) explains the difference between LockeÃ¢â¬â¢s and HobbesÃ¢â¬â¢ viewpoints on revolution thus: At least part of the difference between Hobbes and Locke can be attributed to theirÃ historical circumstances.Ã Hobbes witnessed the English Civil War, which destroyed everyÃ opportunity for happiness for many people. Ã His all-powerful state must have seemed like theÃ lesser of two evils, since it would at least be stable and life would not devolve into anarchy.Ã Ã Locke, however, witnessed the Glorious Revolution, where the government was completelyÃ changed without bloodshed. For him, revolution must not have seemed like such a terribleÃ thing.Ã Most likely, both views are too extreme.Ã Revolution is usually a costly endeavor, sinceÃ those in power rarely relinquish it willingly.Ã However, the possibility or revolution is a keyÃ part of maintaining rights, since an all-powerful government could suppress our rights withoutÃ fear of repercussion. Hobbes, being senior to Locke in age and experience, had apparently seen a bloody war that Locke had not been a witness of.Ã Thus, the views of the philosophers differed with respect to the English Revolution.Ã Had Locke also lived through the English Civil War, he might have been bitter about the idea of revolution as well.Ã Nevertheless, it is important to note that both philosophers believed in human rights.Ã Locke was not a violent agitator.Ã Furthermore, it is clear that his philosophy on revolution was written with ultimate peace in mind. Locke wrote about Ã¢â¬Å"abuse of power by the governmentÃ¢â¬ as a reason for a revolution.Ã In order to serve justice, he considered it ethical for citizens to fight for their rights, even if they must fight the government for the same reason.Ã In LockeÃ¢â¬â¢s view, Ã¢â¬Å"rebellionÃ¢â¬ was a necessity at times of governmental corruption and dissidence.Ã Besides, in the perspective of the philosopher, the people could be trusted to make decisions as regards civil rights.Ã The important matter to consider remained, however, that people could achieve Ã¢â¬Å"restoration of their rightsÃ¢â¬ via a revolution (Kemerling, 2000). LockeÃ¢â¬â¢s philosophy on revolution makes the kinds of allowances for the common people that HobbesÃ¢â¬â¢ philosophy does not allow for.Ã In the latterÃ¢â¬â¢s view, revolutions are bad because they lead to bloodshed.Ã So therefore, governments should be strong enough to rule the people without letting them express their agitation in any form whatsoever. LockeÃ¢â¬â¢s philosophy can debate with HobbesÃ¢â¬â¢ view quite simply by claiming that the victims of bloodshed are usually the common people; and if they are the ones taking responsibility for a revolution, they are the ones also responsible for guarding their safety at all costs during a revolution.Ã Governments that try to quell public rebellion through military violence are bad in any case.Ã Hence, the public is right in demolishing such governments.Ã At the same time, the public must protect itself from the agitation of the government during a revolution. Thus LockeÃ¢â¬â¢s philosophy of revolution allows for public liberty unlike HobbesÃ¢â¬â¢ philosophy, which is similar to the Panopticon.Ã Michel FoucaultÃ¢â¬â¢s (1995) Panopticism begins with a detailed description of the measures to be taken against a seventeenth century plague. The government was meant to exercise absolute control over all citizens during such time, as spaces were to be partitioned and houses were to be closed off.Ã Stray animals were to be killed, and human beings were to be advised that they could only leave town if they wanted to be killed too.Ã Moreover, guards were to be put on duty to keep a constant eye on the people.Ã Every guard was to be informed that Ã¢â¬Å"if he leaves the street, he will be condemned to death.Ã¢â¬ The government aimed to create a pure and disciplined community through these orders.Ã What is more, as Foucault points out, it was a Ã¢â¬Å"political dreamÃ¢â¬ to create such an obedient community, even for a brief period of time.Ã Such an obedient community happens to be a model for other communities and other times.Ã This plagued community was further marked by: Ã¢â¬ ¦strict divisions; not laws transgressed, but the penetration of regulation into even theÃ smallest details of everyday life through the mediation of the complete hierarchy that assuredÃ the capillary functioning of power; not masks that were put on and taken off, but theÃ assignment to each individual of his Ã¢â¬Ëtrue' name, his Ã¢â¬Ëtrue' place, his Ã¢â¬Ëtrue' body, his Ã¢â¬Ëtrue'Ã disease.Ã The plague as a form, at once real and imaginary, of disorder had as its medical andÃ political correlative discipline.Ã Behind the disciplinary mechanisms can be read the hauntingÃ memory of Ã¢â¬Ëcontagions', of the plague, of rebellions, crimes, vagabondage, desertions, peopleÃ who appear and disappear, live and die in disorder. The Panopticon state is the literal embodiment of HobbesÃ¢â¬â¢ philosophy of government.Ã Totally unlike LockeÃ¢â¬â¢s state of freedom, which is equal to democracy in present times, HobbesÃ¢â¬â¢ is a restrictive state with police control at best.Ã From these two differing philosophies of government arise two dissimilar, defining concepts of revolution.Ã People through history have found it difficult to believe in both at the same time.Ã To answer their concerns, both Hobbes and Locke advise their readers and thinkers to use their reason in changing or adopting a form of government (Sharp). In the history of literature, there have always been different themes and genres of writing. But few have been as different or unique as that of the Ã¢â¬Å"gothicÃ¢â¬ literature. Of all the gothic authors of history, few writing has captured the mind and plunged it into the depths of fear as that of Edgar Allen Poe. PoeÃ¢â¬â¢s Ã¢â¬Å"The Cask of Amontillado,Ã¢â¬ is a story that shows us how deadly being prideful can be. Themes of dishonour, revenge and questionable justice all come together in this story. In this essay, I will discuss how the setting, irony and the lack of certain details all contribute to the gothic theme and the spine-tingling effect of the story. nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;The setting and clothing of the story are two of the keyÃ¢â¬ ¦show more contentÃ¢â¬ ¦Fortunato himself displays much irony as well. First, his name resembles the word Ã¢â¬Å"fortuneÃ¢â¬ and to have good fortune can mean to have good luck, which is obviously not what Fortunate has, having been left for eternity to perish alone in darkness. FortunatoÃ¢â¬â¢s clothes are another source of irony. He wears the clothes of a jester, Ã¢â¬Å"He had on a tight-fitting parti-striped dress, and his head was surmounted by the conical cap and bells.Ã¢â¬ (70) Since jesters are often portrayed as trusting and very foolish, this completely describes Fortunato as he willing and unknowingly walks with his murderer to his doom. Another source of irony is found in almost everything that Montresor says. Every time he speaks to Fortunato, he speaks to him as if he is his friend. He speaks to him with a sarcasm that is not noticeable. However, since we are inside his head, we know that Montresor is not actually friends with Fortunato and this ploy is all actually part of his plot to kill Fortunato. In the beginning, Montresor says to himself that Ã¢â¬Å"I must not only punish but punish with impunity.Ã¢â¬ (70) This is ironic when we later find out that MontresorÃ¢â¬â¢s family motto is Ã¢â¬Å"No one provokes me with impunity.Ã¢â¬ From the motto and the description of the coat of arms we receive, it can be assumed that MontresorÃ¢â¬â¢s family has had a history of insanity and
